With CAD, even arcs and angles are easy to measure. Measuring the parts of your project is fast and accurate because the computer does the math for you.
In the end, all 15 programs we tested were capable of making precise drawings, but some were considerably easier to learn and use than others. Our primary goal for this test was to find a CAD program that's easy to learn and use, yet powerful enough to create precise woodworking project drawings.

Most CAD programs are available as free trial downloads. Thanks to the Internet, you can try before you buy. Others are more general in nature and make a better choice for us. Some are made specifically for architects or engineers and are more specialized or advanced than most woodworkers need. Dozens of CAD programs are on the market, ranging in price from a few dozen to thousands of dollars. A CAD program may not be on the top of your “tools to buy” list, but using CAD does provide some big benefits if you like to design your own projects or build projects that have lots of curves and angles in them. For $150, you can get one with all the drawing power you're likely to ever need. Fifty bucks will buy you a starter program that's easy to learn and use.
(Undergraduate Art and Design) Studio 6 (Fall, Spring).You don't have to spend much money to get a good computer-aided drafting (CAD) program for drawing woodworking projects. Accumulative aspects of the curriculum included the exploration of historical and cultural themes and concepts intertwined with aspects of personal interpretation and experience. Visual comprehension, the ability to organize perceptions and horizontal thinking that crosses other disciplines and theories, are key foundational components to the development of problem solving skills. The course addresses a wide variety of media, tools, techniques both traditional and technological, and theoretical concepts to facilitate skill development and experimentation with process. Concepts are introduced through lectures, discussions, demonstrations, research, assigned projects and critiques. Organized to create a broad introductory experience, the course focuses on the development of both a visual and a verbal vocabulary as a means of exploring, developing and understanding two-dimensional compositions. #ONLINE WOODWORKING CAD PORTABLE#
Topics will include lumber selection, the safe and proper use of machinery and portable power tools, the care and use of gouges, spokeshaves, and other sharp-edged hand tools, as well as sanding and wood finishing, and will support the focus on craftsmanship, technical knowledge and design development. Students will develop skills to formalize individual design ideas for presentation, planning and construction. Participants in this course will gain an understanding of the inherent properties of wood, identifying assets and limitations of the material as they design and build. This course will provide students with fundamental techniques necessary to design and fabricate refined hand carved vessels and other wooden objects.
